Surveying today's road…

ROAD #——

Today's road

Steering

Drive alongside

↑ gas↓ brake · hold to reverse←→ steerQE indicatorsR back on roadX autodriveEsc pause

Keep your lane, signal, leave a gap. Finishing sooner never scores higher.

RUN ENDED

Contact with another vehicle

A real collision ends the run. Leave a two-second gap, and only overtake when the oncoming lane is clear.

Paused

Get your grip, then resume: the way you hold the phone then is straight.

How the daily road works

One road, every day

Everyone gets the same road on the same date — a new one at your midnight. Drive it as often as you like; your best run of the day is the one that counts.

Three medal ghosts

Bronze, Silver and Gold each drive today's road with the same keys you have. Bronze is in a hurry and gets there first. Gold is calm. Gold scores highest.

Send your ghost

Share your card and the link carries your drive with it — and the car you drove. Whoever opens it drives today's road alongside your ghost, and sees your score checked, not just claimed.

Traffic, every day

Slower trucks, vans and cars share your side of the road; oncoming traffic has the other. Some days are quiet, some are busy. Contact costs points, and a real collision ends the run.

Rules of the road

Every day is set in a country, and keeps to its side of the road — left in the UK, India, Japan or Australia, right elsewhere — with its own speed units and signs. Stay in your lane, signal before you change lanes, and only pull out to overtake where the centre line is dashed. Solid means no.

Fifty cars

Pick from forty-nine real cars by thirty-three makers, from city hatchbacks to supercars, each with its own power, weight, grip and gearing — or the house Smooooth GT. See the garage.

How you're scored

Smoothness, control, pace and speed limits are scored by the very same code the Smooooth Operator app uses on real roads, run in your browser. Lane discipline and traffic are the game's own two rules on top.

Smoothness
38%
Control
20%
Pace
16%
Lane
11%
Legal
8%
Traffic
7%

Pace peaks at the road's calm reference pace and falls away on the fast side. Arrive a tenth sooner than the reference and you lose half your pace points. Time spent patiently behind slower traffic is added to the reference, so waiting never costs you and a legal overtake never gains you anything. The coffee cup on the dash spills when you brake, accelerate or corner harder than the scorer counts as smooth.

Lane rewards keeping to the middle of your lane, signalling every lane change, and never pulling out across a solid line, cutting a bend over the centre line or riding the edge line. Traffic rewards a two-second gap, overtaking only into a clear oncoming lane, pulling back in with room to spare, and never touching anyone.

Controls

Keyboard

↑/W gas · ↓/S brake (hold it at a stop to reverse) · ←→/AD steer · Q/E indicate left / right · R back on the road · C camera · Esc pause · Backspace restart

Touch

Hold the phone like a wheel and turn it to steer: brake under your left thumb (hold it at a stop to reverse), gas under your right, indicators above the brake. However you're holding it when you set off (or resume) counts as straight. Or pick Slide (a thumb on the pad, the wheel follows how far you slide) or Buttons on the road card. Sideways gives the widest view; upright works too.

Controller

Left stick steers, right trigger for gas, left trigger to brake, bumpers for the indicators. A to start, Start to pause, Y back on the road.

Pedals are progressive: a tap is gentle, a hold is strong. Letting go of the gas eases off the way a foot does. The smoothest drivers barely touch the brake. Indicators cancel themselves once you are settled in the new lane.

On real roads, there is no ghost.

The game is a game. The Smooooth Operator app scores how you actually drive real roads — smoothness, control, pace and staying legal — with no clock and no rival on screen while you drive. The game's lane and traffic rules are not driving instruction; follow your local rules of the road. Drive safely, always.

Questions

Why did a faster run score lower?

Because pace is scored against the road's calm reference pace, and the curve falls away on the fast side. Hurrying also tends to cost smoothness and control, and speeding costs you under Legal.

Why wasn't my run given a medal?

Medals need a clean run. If the car leaves the road, touches another vehicle, or you put it back with R, the run is still scored and shown — it just isn't eligible.

Why did I lose lane points when I overtook?

Overtaking is allowed — where the centre line is dashed, with your indicator on before you pull out and before you pull back in, and with room to spare both ways. Pulling out across a solid line, forgetting to signal, or sitting in the oncoming lane without passing anyone costs lane points.

Does the car I pick change my score?

Every car is scored the same way. A heavier or softer car is harder to drive smoothly, and a powerful one tempts a heavy foot; the medal ghosts always drive the Smooooth GT, so medals mean the same whatever you drive.

Are the cars official?

No. Each real car's name describes the car its physics approximates, from public figures. The bodies are generic shapes, there are no logos, and no maker is affiliated with the game or endorses it.

Is my progress saved?

On this device, in your browser's local storage. There's no account. Clearing your site data clears your bests. To play on another phone or computer, open the stats panel (📊) and scan its QR code with the other device, or send yourself the sync link: your days, streak and bests merge across, and nothing is stored on any server.

What is Unlimited?

An endless road with no finish and no score. Choose the country, landscape, light, weather and traffic (or none), and drive as long as you like, with a pace ghost driving the calm line beside you if you want one. Press X to let the car drive itself for a while. Unlimited never counts toward your daily stats.

Is a shared ghost link private?

The ghost travels after the # in the link, which browsers never send to a server. It is stored nowhere except in the message you sent it in.
